From Assessment to Implementation: A Regional Agenda to Build, Measure and Scale

The III Regional Summit of Methane consolidated a platform for strategic cooperation on energy systems in Latin America and the Caribbean in Brasília. It brought together representatives of national and subnational governments, international organizations, companies, research centres, civil society organizations and financial institutions to exchange experiences and strengthen regional action on methane emissions.

The third edition built on the process initiated in Colombia and Peru and marked a new phase for the regional agenda. Following several years of information gathering, assessments, good-practice exchange and capacity strengthening, the challenge now is to translate this knowledge into public policies, investments and mitigation measures that can be implemented and sustained over time.

Discussions were structured around three complementary dimensions: building capacities and institutions that create enabling conditions for action; measuring with reliable information to inform decisions; and scaling solutions capable of delivering tangible results.

The agenda also broadened its sectoral scope. While oil and gas remained a priority, the Summit incorporated emissions associated with coal mining, waste management, biogas, biomethane and hydropower generation.
